Package refers to the case in which a semiconductor integrated circuit chip is installed. It plays a very important role in PCB and PCBA and semiconductor industry. Why do you need package ?
In the PCB, PCBA and semiconductor industry,package is very necessary for IC and electronic components.
On the one hand, the package not only plays the role of installing, fixing, sealing, protecting the chip and enhancing the electric heating performance, but also connects the contacts on the chip to the pins of the package shell with wires, and these pins are passed through the printed circuit board. The wires on the chip are connected to other devices, so as to realize the connection between the internal chip and the external circuit.
On the other hand, chips packaged according to uniform specifications are also easier to install and transport. Electronic components have different packaging types. Although the shapes of different types of components are similar, the internal structures and uses are quite different. For example, the components packaged in TO220 may include diode, transistor. TO-3 package components may be transistor, integrated circuit and so on.
DIP (Dual In-line Package) Package
(1) DO (diode) series package:
DO (diode) refers to the package with pins. The appearance of the DO series is basically the same, but there is a difference in size.
DO-15: The diameter of the diode body is between 2.60mm-3.61mm, the length of the body is between 5.85-7.63mm, the diameter of the pins at both ends is between 0.71mm-0.84mm, and the length of the pins at both ends is 25.4mm
(2) TO (Transistor Outline) package:
Different manufacturers have different package sizes.
About TO package code: TO-220AB is a specific JEDEC code, “AB” refers to the 3 straight pin codes that meet specific measurement specifications.
TO-220-3 is a general code, referring to parts with TO-220 body and 3 pins. In the same package series, there are also options such as 2-pin, 3-pin, 5-pin or 7-pin.
(2) SOT (Small Outline Transistor), often used to make small circuit boards, generally the number of pins is less than or equal to 5. There are two types according to the surface width, one with a width of 1.3mm and one with a width of 1.6mm
SOT89 has three short pins, which are distributed on one side of the transistor, and the other side is a metal heat sink, which is connected to the base to increase heat dissipation. Transistors are often used in silicon power surface mount for high power applications.
SOT143 has four wing short pins that lead out from both sides. The big end of the pin is the collector. This package is common among high frequency transistors.
SOT252 is a high-power transistor, with three pins on one side, and the middle pin is short, which is the collector and connected to the larger pin on the other end.
(3) SOP (Small Outline package): The most common SMD IC package , the pins are drawn from the two longer sides of the pin, and the ends of the pins extend outward in a gull-wing-shaped surface mount package.
Common SOP package types: SOP-8, SOP-16, SOP-20, SOP-28 (the number represents the number of pins)
(4) SMA SMB SMC
Volume difference: SMA < SMB < SMC
The choice of package is mainly affected by the power. Generally, the choice of package is determined according to the current parameters. If several packages meet the power and heat generation requirements, then the package size should be reasonably selected according to the structure of the product.
