Custom

Custom Ceramic PCB Services- IBE Electronics

When it comes to developing a ceramic PCB from scratch, there are 4 key stages to getting a finished product from your mind to hand. Below is a quick rundown of the entire process that IBE Electronics follows:

1.Ceramic PCB Prototyping
The prototyping stage states that IBE Electronics will bring your idea to life in the first step. Your idea might have some flaws in it. So IBE Electronics will go through your idea and design thoroughly and will detect all the goofs and flaws in it. They’re corrected at this stage and cost analysis is done after that.

2.Ceramic PCB Designing
Once the prototype is finalized, IBE Electronics will list out all the components that are needed in the circuit. We’ll develop a diagram, also called a schematic diagram that’s very important for the engineers at the later stages. The schematic diagram will include the list of materials, hardware, PCB’s functions, etc., so they can test the product for validity at the later stages.

3.Ceramic PCB Manufacturing
The manufacturing process is rather lengthy and complicated, where the product actually takes a physical form. Below are some steps in the manufacturing process:

i.A photo film is created, using plotter. If there are several layers in your PCB, then photo film for each layer will be printed. A negative film sheet will get printed that will have marks for the position of each component for each layer.

ii.Once the manufacturer gets the sheets printed, they’ll start printing the layers of ceramic PCB from the inside. This means that the innermost layers will be printed first.

4.Ceramic PCB Assembling
PCBs are always manufactured in parts and they need to be assembled before a final product is obtained.

i.When the layers are printed, they’re aligned and stacked on top of each other according to the design.

ii.Any vias that need to be implemented are done at this stage and copper plates are attached between each layer.

iii.The out layer is finalized by adding a layer of photoresist to the outer layer.

iv.If there’s any need for copper or tin plating, it’s done at this stage.

v.Surface finish is applied.

vi.The board is cut out from the panel and it’s tested for validity.
Remember the schematic design in the second stage? That diagram is used at the testing phase to check if the circuit board performs according to the requirements defined in the schematic diagram.

Process

Ceramic PCB Manufacturing Process

The complete ceramic PCB manufacturing process is based on the design package that makes the circuit board in physical form. Following is the process of ceramic PCB:

Step 1: Drilling

Drill connecting pipes between metal layers through mechanical drilling machine.

Step 2: Plated through holes

Even though the copper circuits, which are connecting the layer, are drilled, the circuit between different layers fail to be connected. Thus, a conductive layer should be made for connecting the layers. This process also called “PHP” process mainly involves besmearing, electroless copper and electroplating copper.

Step 3: Dry film lamination

To form an etching resistance layer with photosensitive.

Step 4: Image transfer of the inner layer circuit

It transfers the negative film to the surface through exposure.

Step 5: Outer layer circuit exposure

The ceramic PCB board would be exposed and developed again after the attachment of the photosensitive film. The photosensitive film used in this step is to cover those areas where it does not require electroplating.

Step 6: Magnetron sputtering

Through the positive ions generated by the gas discharging process, it can move the material from the original materials to the substrate for the film deposition.

Step 7:Etching

When the ceramic PCB plating is finished, next is the process of stripping, etching and tin stripping. The plating resist should be fully stripped and then the copper that needs to be etched should be exposed on the etching solution. Because the top part of the ceramic PCB is protected by tin, the alkaline etching solution should be used to corrode copper.

Step 8: Electroless Copper Deposition

After drilling, manufacturers deposit a thin coat of copper on the exposed surfaces of the panels chemically. Furthermore, they deposit a copper coat on the hole walls using electroless plating.

Step 9: Solder resist coating

Ceramic PCB is to carry electronic components for connecting circuits. Thus, after we finish the circuit board, the electronic assembly parts on the board should be marked, while those non-assembly parts should be made some protection measure through using polymer materials. Usually, the solder is used for electronic assembly.

How to Select a Ceramic PCB manufacturer

PCBs are made of different materials and ceramic is one such material. Ceramic PCBs offer a totally different set of advantages and applications in the electronics industry, and that’s why they’ve gained a lot of popularity over time. This article revolves around ceramic PCB, its type, and all you need to know about procuring ceramic PCBs for your next big electronics project.

Table of Contents

Types of Ceramic PCB

Ceramic PCBs are of different types that result in different output. In contrast, the ceramics PCB can be classified in three different categories, detailed below:

1.High Temperature Ceramic PCB
As the name suggests, they’re meant to withstand high levels of temperatures. In order to make them rough and tough against extreme temperatures, manufacturers follow a unique manufacturing process. The makers will use plasticizer, aluminum oxide, lubricants, adhesive, and solvent to make a circuit board out of ceramic. After developing the board with these materials, tungsten is deployed on it. Tungsten has the highest boiling point, which makes it ideal for deploying in high temperature ceramic PCB.

2.Thick Film Ceramic PCB
The thick film ceramic PCBs use a thick film of ceramic as a base. On that base, the makers will apply a coat of gold paste and dielectric paste. Once the pastes are placed on the ceramic base, the entire assembly is sent for baking at almost 1000 degrees Celsius until all the pastes settle well on the board. The board is then brought out from baking and left for cooling.

Thick film ceramic PCB is selected when there’s a risk of oxidation of copper in the gadget. Thick film prevents copper from oxidizing. An ideal thick film ceramic PCB can have a thickness from 10 microns to 13 microns.

3.Low Temperature Ceramic PCB
These ceramic PCBs are designed by combining low temperature adhesive with crystal glass. They’re then combined with metal sheets using gold paste. Once the assembly is finished, the maker will cut out the board from the panel and bake it at 900 degrees Celsius.

How Good Is Ceramic for PCB Manufacturing?

Reasons for adopting Ceramic for PCB manufacturing
Reasons for adopting Ceramic for PCB manufacturing

Ceramic is indeed good for PCB manufacturing, but how good? Here are some reasons that tell how good is ceramic for PCB manufacturing:

  • Ceramic PCBs have naturally high level of thermal expansion. This means that in high temperature areas, ceramic PCBs will function well.
  • A ceramic PCB will show-off heavy duty features. This means that ceramic PCBs can last for a long time and function well under extreme work pressure. The resistance of chemical erosion in ceramic PCBs is high. This means that the PCB is expected to last for a long time.
  • There’s high insulation in ceramic PCBs, which result in less heat reaching the components placed on the PCB. As a result, the components are less likely to damage from extreme heat.
  • Ceramic PCBs support high frequency. Therefore, they’re ideal for use in domains such as aircrafts, satellites, networking devices, etc.
  • The process of fabrication and manufacturing is relatively low in ceramic PCBs. While high temperature ceramic PCBs can be a bit costly, there are still other types of ceramic PCBs that are cost efficient. Therefore, you can consider them as a good choice if you’re looking for a budget ceramic PCB.
  • It’s very easy to manufacture ceramic PCBs.

Comparing Thermal Conductivity in Ceramic PCB Over Metal Core PCB

Ceramic PCB uses copper foil plating for electricity conduction. Moreover, most ceramic PCBs use adhesive, combined with some materials as a base material. Therefore, thermal conductivity is different in ceramic PCBs as compared to metal core PCBs. Here’s how:

Ceramic PCB uses plasticizer, adhesive, and solvents as base. Metal core PCBs use metal base. Metals tend to absorb a lot of heat and become extremely hot. As a result, you can expect less thermal conductivity from them. Ceramic PCBs don’t absorb much heat and most of the heat is dispersed.

Here’s How To Select The right Ceramic PCB Manufacturer

You may select a ceramic PCB manufacturer based on:

1.Work Experience
Ask the manufacturer how much work experience they have in the field. There’s a possibility that the manufacturer might have several years of experience in metal core PCB or other types of PCB but may not have much exposure to ceramic PCB. You can ask for a portfolio or a list of clients they’ve served. That’ll help you get an idea how good that ceramic PCB manufacturer is.

2.Testimonials
You can ask for testimonials (if any) that the manufacturer’s previous clients left for them. You can go through any reviews, so you can get an idea if the manufacturer has any reputation or not in the market.

3.Lead Time
You should go with a ceramic PCB manufacturer, who has a reliable lead time. Always ask in advance how much time the manufacturer will take in each step and how much delay you can expect in case of raw material scarcity, holidays, etc. That’ll help you calculate the estimated time you’ll need to complete your project.

4.Output Capacity
If you’re looking for bulk orders in the future, it’s always to go with a manufacturer who has the ability to manufacture and supply your required quantity per week or per month. Moreover, you can avoid going with large manufacturers, as they tend to serve several clients simultaneously, and they’ll prefer high paying clients over you. Consider going with a medium or a small manufacturer, who has the capacity to supply required pieces.

Characteristics of a Good Ceramic PCB Manufacturer

While you may choose a manufacturer based on the features above, it’s also important to shortlist a manufacturer with good traits and good personality. Below are some characteristics of a good ceramic PCB manufacturer:

1.A good maker will keep things transparent, and will avoid any communication that can lead to confusions later on. A good maker will ensure that all the risk analysis, cost analysis, etc., are done and it gives you a clear quotation of the project.

2.A good manufacturer will always be a man of his words. He/she will never withdraw from the ongoing project in between or change the terms of agreement halfway during the project.

3.Good and reliable manufacturers will make sure that your project ends in success by hook or crook. Even if they have to work overtime, they’ll make sure to meet the deadlines without compromising on the quality.

4.A good manufacturer will always do what they say. This means that they’ll include all the raw materials in the circuit board that they’ll promise.

5.One characteristic of a good manufacturer is that they’ll help you ship your products to your location anyhow. If they have to contact logistics services, they’ll do that on your behalf and will get your products to you at a reasonable price.
